Greater Noida carnival 2019: Technovation Hackathon

Background

The UN Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Cities initiative has selected Noida and Greater Noida to participate in the 'University City' category, as the only invitee from India and they will be competing with elite university cities such as Cambridge, Palo Alto and Heidelberg, among others. Overall, 25 cities across the world have been selected in five categories.

Purpose

Hackathon is aimed at generating fresh, innovative ideas from the youth of today to solve the present and anticipated future problems. Greater Noida is situated in a key location, and is slated for exponential economic growth. With growth comes a gamut of problems and this event is designed to obtain novel solutions for those problems.

Themes

There are four major themes for the event. The description of each, along with the problem statements are as follows:

1. Waste Management

Modern societies generate a large amount of waste, directly or indirectly, to fulfil its various needs. These include municipal waste, e-waste, construction waste, and packaging waste, etc. Unfortunately, most of this waste is not properly managed leading to environmental, health and aesthetic issues. Such wastes are a burden to the city’s economy and well being. Appropriate management and disposal, including energy generation, volume minimization, incorporation into useful products can be viable and environment-friendly option.

Tentative Problem statements:

  • * Waste minimization and reuse
  • * Improvised and effective plastic waste management at social gatherings
  • * Alternatives & management of small plastic packaging in daily consumables like sauce, shampoo etc.
  • * E-waste management
  • * Agro-waste management
  • * Municipal waste management
  • 2. Security & Surveillance

Security is one of the prime concerns of any human being and a city’s development is dependent on the well-being of its inhabitants. Security & surveillance play a key role in ensuring the prosperity of citizens. The various sub-areas of security & surveillance include (but not limited to) home security, medical emergency, accident & first fast SOS, city transport, security of women & children, tourist support, etc.

    Tentative Problem Statements:

  • 3. Smart Transportation & Traffic Management

Greater Noida, a rapidly growing city in Delhi-NCR, has its share of transportation & traffic needs and issues. To ensure its place among the elite cities, smart transportation is a need of the hour for Greater Noida. The citizens must have access to safe, affordable and sustainable transportation systems, including an emphasis on e-mobility, electric vehicles (EVs), mass transport, rapid transport, and self-driving vehicles. Apart from smart transportation, traffic management is a key requirement given the heavy influx of industries and residents expected over the coming decades. The optimal solutions may include mechanized parking, elevated corridors, underpasses, etc.

  • * Traffic management solutions for Pari Chowk
  • * Vehicle management system for Jagat Farm
  • * Electric vehicles
  • * Autonomous Vehicles
  • * Sensor based traffic management

  • 4. Energy efficiency & Green Energy

With the incremental affluence, cities are becoming major sources of pollutants that are causing climate change. A key solution is the management of our energy resources, making the existing sources/network more efficient and switching to greener energy options to the possible extent. India is making a giant leap in renewable energy adoption, esp. the Solar energy. An emerging city like Greater Noida can make its own contribution in this area.
